About St. Mary's preparatory and kindergarten school

The St. Mary's Preparatory and Kindergarten School was invented as an experiment in early 1987, by Rev. Anthony Ottey and his wife, of the St. Mary's Anglican Church.

They had realized the need for a school in the area and of such the school was constructed and named after the church. Hence, it is considered to be a church school.

The school is located in the community of Montpelier, a rural section in the parish of St. James. St. Mary's Prep. is about thirteen (13) kilometers south of the city of Montego Bay - the parish's capital.

The school sits on approximately four (4) acres of land in the valley between the Cambridge and the Mt. Carey Hills, off the Montpelier main road onto the Blue Hole community.

On site is an historical building of the St. Mary's Anglican Church. The school has started out with only one concrete building structure and throughout the years additional structures were added; these include classrooms, canteen, tuck shop, library, a modern computer lab, a multi-purpose hall and the latest addition our newly built multi-purpose court.

The St. Mary's Preparatory currently holds a population of three hundred and ninety-four (394) students, with a staff compliment of twenty-one (21) teachers, one (1) secretary, one (1) chef, one (1) gardener, two (2) janitors, principal and vice principal.

The school is fenced with an inner fence for extra safety for our kindergarten babies.

The St. Mary's Preparatory and Kindergarten School serves the adjoining communities located within a four mile radius; namely Blue hole, Montpelier, Mt Carey, Anchovy, Copper Wood, Bickersteth, Chester Castle and Cambridge. However, we have students coming from as far as Haddo, Ramble, Rhyne Park among other communities in and around Montego Bay.

Even though this school is located in the rural community, this does not stop it from making its marks. Its great achievements and participation in the various clubs and societies have brought it into the spotlights.

We have made various achievements under the leadership of the current principal Dr. Anthony Taylor.

We have won The Spelling Bee Championship for the parish of St James, we were winner of the Montego Bay Co-orp. Credit Union Quiz, two times winner of the Miss St James 4H Cultural Queen and also continuous winners of various gold medals in the J.C.D.C traditional folks and popular dances, where we went on to represent our parish at the national level in Kingston with our different pieces.

Football, cricket, track and field events are other areas in which the school is also well known for; and soon to be apart of both basketball and netball leagues.
